Website Development

Building and maintaining a website is an arduous task for many companies and small businesses. The steep learning curve of HTML makes it difficult for non-specialized individuals to create or make changes to the company's website. Hiring in-house web developers often comes with long-term six figure salary commitments.

A common alternative companies turn to is hiring a digital marketing agency to develop a website between $10,000-$40,000. I previously worked at a venture capital backed start-up that spent $100,000 with a digital marketing agency to build a website prior to my arrival. The greatest challenge with this alternative is that digital marketing agencies often don't provide efficient content management systems for clients to make website changes on their own. I remember having to create tickets in Basecamp to inform the digital marketing agency to make website changes at $125 per hour. If my company launched a new product at 6 AM the following day, the agency would charge a time and half ($187.50 per hour) because it required a web developer to work during off hours. When I requested access to make changes on my own, they provided a WordPress account that only gave me access to the blog section.

Another alternative companies take with their web development is outsourcing to foreign countries. This is a more cost effective route since salaries and wages in certain countries are significantly lower than domestic ones, yet quality tends to dramatically drop due to time, language and culture differences. The first company I worked for employed two web developers that lived on the other side of the world. I would create tickets describing how I wanted pages to look like by attaching copy, designs, and instructions. They would create the pages based on how they interpreted the tickets during my off hours since they were in a different time zone. The problem I encountered when I'd walk into work the next day was that they'd interpret some of the instructions incorrectly and create pages that were subpar. I would then update the ticket explaining what they did wrong, how to fix it, and wait another day to see what they would come back with. Sometimes I would schedule 3 AM calls to ensure they understood what needed to be on the page.
